Early Life and Military Service

Baba Harbhajan Singh was born in a Sikh family in Punjab. He joined the Indian Army in 1966 as a soldier in the 14 Rajput Regiment. Known for his dedication and bravery, he was stationed at the Nathula Pass in Sikkim, near the Indo-China border.

Mysterious Death and the Legend

In 1968, while escorting a mule caravan near Nathula, Harbhajan Singh slipped and fell into a glacier. His body was discovered three days later, and it is said that he himself guided the search party to his body through a dream.

Soon after his death, soldiers in his regiment reported visions of him appearing in their dreams, warning them of upcoming dangers. This led to the belief that his spirit continued to protect the Indian Army.

The Temple of Baba Harbhajan Singh

To honor his spirit, the Indian Army built a shrine called Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir in Sikkim. Soldiers believe that he still patrols the borders and protects them from enemy threats. His belongings, including his uniform and boots, are maintained at the shrine.

A unique tradition followed by the Indian Army is that a berth is reserved for Baba Harbhajan Singh whenever his regiment moves. Even in official documents, he is considered "on duty."
