Long ago, there lived a rich merchant and his wife. They had great wealth, but the merchant’s wife was very proud and careless about religious duties. She never respected saints, guests, or the poor.

One day, Brihaspati Dev came to her house disguised as a saint and asked for alms. The woman rudely replied that she was too busy to give anything. The saint returned several times, but she insulted him each time.

Finally, the saint said, “If you are troubled by too much wealth and work, I can tell you a way to become free from it.”

The woman became interested and asked for the method.

The saint said:

  • Sweep the house after sunset.
  • Wash your hair on Thursday.
  • Cut your nails and clothes on Thursday.
  • Throw garbage around the house.
  • Disrespect guests and elders.

The woman followed all these wrong practices. Slowly, her wealth disappeared. Her business failed, food became scarce, and the family fell into poverty.

After some time, the same saint returned. This time the woman was sad and weak. She recognized her mistakes and asked for forgiveness.

The saint then revealed his true form as Brihaspati Dev and said:

“If you sincerely worship on Thursdays, respect elders and guests, keep your home clean, avoid harmful actions, and help the needy, prosperity and peace will return.”

He advised her to:

  • Observe Thursday fasts.
  • Wear yellow clothes.
  • Offer yellow sweets, gram dal, bananas, and turmeric.
  • Listen to the Brihaspativar Katha with devotion.
  • Avoid anger and false speech.

The woman followed these teachings faithfully. Gradually, happiness, prosperity, and peace returned to her home.
