The Story

Long ago, there lived a wealthy merchant with his wife. They were happy and prosperous, but the merchant’s wife strongly believed in observing the Wednesday fast.

One day, the merchant had to travel to another town for business. His wife warned him not to begin a journey on Wednesday because it was considered inauspicious according to traditional belief. But the merchant ignored her advice and left with his wife in a bullock cart.

On the way, they stopped near a river to rest. The merchant went to fetch water. When he returned, he was shocked to see another man sitting beside his wife in the cart. The stranger looked exactly like him in appearance, clothes, and voice.

The merchant became angry and accused the stranger of deception. Soon, villagers gathered there, but nobody could tell who the real husband was because both men looked identical.

The matter reached the king. Even the king could not decide the truth. The merchant then realized his mistake of ignoring the sacred Wednesday tradition and silently prayed for forgiveness.

At that moment, Lord Ganesha appeared through divine grace. The duplicate man disappeared instantly. The merchant understood that this was a lesson for disrespecting the sanctity of Budhwar vrat.

He apologized sincerely and promised to honor the vrat from then onward. After this, the couple lived happily and peacefully.
