Early Life

Kabir Das was born in the 15th century in or near Varanasi. According to popular stories, he was found as a baby near a pond and was raised by a poor Muslim weaver couple named Niru and Nima. Kabir grew up in a humble family and learned weaving as his profession.

From childhood, Kabir was deeply spiritual. He wanted to become a disciple of the Hindu saint Ramananda. One famous story says that Kabir lay on the steps of the river Ganga early in the morning so Ramananda would accidentally step on him. When Ramananda touched him, he said “Ram! Ram!” Kabir accepted these words as his spiritual initiation.

Teachings

Kabir believed that God is one and can be reached through love and devotion, not through rituals or religious divisions. He criticized both Hindu and Muslim religious practices when they became blind rituals without true faith.

His teachings focused on:

  • Equality of all people
  • Simplicity and honesty
  • Love for humanity
  • Devotion to God
  • Avoiding superstition and hatred

Kabir wrote beautiful poems and couplets called dohas in simple language so ordinary people could understand them.

One famous doha is:

“Bura jo dekhan main chala, bura na milya koi
Jo dil khoja aapna, mujhse bura na koi.”

Meaning:
“When I looked for evil in others, I found none.
When I looked inside myself, I found no one worse than me.”

Death and Legacy

Kabir spent much of his life spreading messages of peace and unity. After his death, both Hindus and Muslims claimed him as their own. According to legend, when people lifted the cloth covering his body, they found only flowers instead of his body. Half the flowers were buried by Muslims, and the other half were cremated by Hindus, symbolizing unity between religions.
