The Story of Kabir Das
Kabir Das was born in India in the 15th century. According to legends, he was found as a baby near a lake by a poor Muslim weaver couple named Niru and Nima. They raised him with love and taught him weaving.
From childhood, Kabir was very spiritual. He believed that God is one and that all people are equal, whether Hindu or Muslim. He did not believe in blind rituals or caste discrimination. Instead, he taught people to live honestly, help others, and remember God with a pure heart.
Kabir wanted to become the disciple of the famous saint Ramananda. But because Kabir belonged to a weaver family, many people thought he could not become a disciple. One day, Kabir lay on the steps of the river Ganga where Ramananda went every morning. When Ramananda accidentally stepped on him, he said, “Ram! Ram!” Kabir accepted these words as his spiritual blessing and became his disciple.
Kabir wrote many poems and couplets called dohas. His dohas taught important lessons about life, kindness, truth, and humanity. People from both Hindu and Muslim communities respected him.
One famous doha by Kabir is:
“Bura jo dekhan main chala, bura na milya koi,
Jo man khoja aapna, mujhse bura na koi.”
