Story of Kabir Das (In English)

Kabir Das was born in the 15th century in Varanasi. According to popular belief, he was found as a baby near a pond by a poor Muslim couple named Niru and Nima, who raised him with love and care.

From childhood, Kabir was very spiritual. He wanted to become a disciple of the great Hindu saint Ramananda. However, because Kabir belonged to a weaver’s family, many people thought he could not become a disciple.

One day, Kabir lay on the steps of the river bank where Ramananda used to go early in the morning. When Ramananda accidentally stepped on him, he said, “Ram! Ram!” Kabir accepted these words as his spiritual initiation and became Ramananda’s disciple.

Kabir grew up to become a wise poet and saint. He taught people that:

• God is one.
• All humans are equal.
• Religion should not divide people.
• Love and kindness are more important than rituals.

He criticized blind faith, caste discrimination, and unnecessary religious customs in both Hinduism and Islam. His poems and couplets, called “dohas,” are still very popular today.

One famous doha by Kabir is:

“Kal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab.”
(“What you plan for tomorrow, do today; what you plan for today, do now.”)

Kabir spent his life spreading the message of peace, unity, and devotion. His teachings influenced both the Bhakti and Sufi movements in India.

He died in Maghar. According to legend, after his death, Hindus and Muslims argued about his funeral rites. But when they lifted the cloth covering his body, they found only flowers. Half the flowers were buried by Muslims, and the other half were cremated by Hindus — symbolizing unity between religions.
