The Story

Long ago, there lived an old woman who was a great devotee of Lord Hanuman. Every Tuesday, she observed a strict fast and worshipped him with complete faith. She never cooked food by digging the earth or smearing the floor with mud on Tuesdays, because she considered it sacred to Lord Hanuman.

One day, Lord Hanuman decided to test her devotion. He came to her house disguised as a sage and asked for food. The old woman respectfully welcomed him and said she would prepare food immediately.

The sage said, “First clean the place by smearing it with mud and then cook for me.”

The woman folded her hands and replied, “Forgive me, Maharaj, but on Tuesdays I do not dig the earth or smear the floor. This is my vow for Lord Hanuman. I can do any other service for you.”

The sage repeatedly insisted, but the woman remained firm in her devotion and did not break her vow.

Pleased with her faith, the sage said, “If you truly wish to serve me, then let me cook food on your son’s back.”

Though shocked, the woman trusted Lord Hanuman completely. She called her son, laid him down, and the sage lit a fire on the boy’s back and prepared food.

After eating, the sage asked the woman to call her son. The woman became worried, but when she called him, her son came out healthy and smiling, without any injury.

At that moment, the sage revealed his true form as Lord Hanuman. He blessed the old woman and said, “Whoever observes the Tuesday fast with devotion and listens to this katha shall receive my blessings and be protected from suffering.”

From then onward, people began observing the Tuesday vrat with faith and devotion.
